Alex Golesh's biggest concern with the Auburn Tigers has changed as fall camp officially ends and preparation for Baylor begins.
Golesh isn't questioning whether Auburn will play hard. Now he's focused on maturity.
Can Auburn's players handle classes, film study, recovery, schoolwork and everything else that comes with a real game week while still preparing at the level required to win SEC football games? That's why Auburn's mock game week matters.
Fortunately, Byrum Brown is already providing the blueprint.
Golesh described his quarterback as being as particular as anybody he's been around, with Brown's days essentially planned down to the minute. Film, recovery, nutrition and preparation all have a purpose — and Auburn's young quarterbacks are getting a front-row seat to it.
Plus, Golesh says Auburn's offense is “light years ahead” of where his previous offenses have been at this point. The catch? Auburn gets young quickly once it reaches into its depth.
And the running-back situation continues getting more interesting. Jeremiah Cobb and Omar Mabson have established roles, but Bryson Washington has taken “big steps” and could now have an opportunity against his former team in Week 1.
Fall camp is over.
Now Auburn has to prove it can prepare like a team that's ready to win.
